Commercial Driver’s License Testing

SMG Incorporated is certified by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Division of Driver’s Licenses, to administer commercial driver’s license skills tests for the Class A, B, C, and Class B Passenger Endorsement.

Skills Tests

For Class A: Pre Trip Inspection, Basic Controls, and Road Course Test performed in manual or automatic transmission vehicle with a fifth wheel trailer.


For Class B: Pre Trip Inspection, Basic Controls, and Road Test performed in a Dump Truck.


For Class B Passenger: Pre Trip Inspection, Basic Controls, and Road Test performed in a Bus.


For Class C: With or Without Air Brake: Pre-Trip Inspection, Basic Controls, and Road Test.


CDL Skills Test Fees

Pre-trip Inspection: $150.00*
Basic Controls: $150.00*
Road Course: $150.00*

State Retest: $450.00* (applies to applicants who originally tested with an automatic transmission)

Payment for fees are preferred in the form of cash or a company check.

*For all debit and credit card payments, an additional 2.75% convenience fee will be added to each transaction.

You must bring your permit and driver’s license. Allow approximately 2 hours for testing.

If a test is cancelled without at least a five business day (M-F) notice, you will be charged a reschedule fee of $50.

Scheduling Criteria

  1. You cannot start a test before the scheduled time of test. You can start a test after scheduled time provided it does not exceed one hour from the originally scheduled start time.
  2. Tests must be scheduled at least two business days in advance The chart below explains the earliest day you may test based on the day you schedule them:

An applicant must hold their Learner’s Permit for at least fourteen days before they are eligible to test. If the Learner’s Permit expires before they complete all three skills test, they must retake all the skills tests they may have previously passed. They do not have to wait the fourteen days after being issued their second permit. If their second Learner’s Permit expires before they pass all three skills tests, then they must retake the written tests also.

According to regulations set forth by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), a licensed commercial driver operating in the United States must be able to read and speak the English language sufficiently to understand and respond to official inquiries and directions.

The CDL skills tests must be taken and passed sequentially; starting with the Pre-trip Inspection followed by the Basic Skills Tests (Backing maneuvers), and finally, the Road Test.

Items to Bring to Your Skills Test

  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Temporary Permit
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card
  • Payment in the form of cash, company check, or credit card.
  • If you will be driving your own vehicle, you must have valid registration and insurance.
